- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hipsygirl -- A Forgotten Classic : I came by this book by chance; when looking up the movie (reminiscing on when I watched as a teenager), I learned that it was based on this book (which to my surprise was part of a trilogy!). - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jeremy Richmond -- A really emotionally moving novel : "The Blue Lagoon: a romance" by Henry De Vere Stacpoole is a novel that almost brought tears to my eyes. It starts out with the passengers and crew on a ship having to abandon it after it catches fire. A boat containing a boy and girl and an Irishman loses contact with the other boats due to a fog. The boat eventually drifts to an island paradise where the three decide to stay until help comes. Eventually the Irishman passes away and the boy and girl called Dick and Emmeline are left alone on the island. The rest of the book details their life and romance on the island. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chris Hanner -- Good Read - Book and Movie work well together : Recently watched the movie and noticed it was based on this book. When I found the book on Amazon (Kindle), and realized that it was written Many years ago I wasn't sure it would be a good read since sometimes older books don't match up well with modern reading expectations. However, I was pleased with the pacing of the book, it's lovely use of language and how it and the movie (which I really like) did justice to each other. There are some differences, but not enough to put you off either one. One thought provoking difference is how Em is portrayed in the book as a dreamer who can't even swim and is somewhat demeaned as being a woman. I know that's how men (the author?) thought of women when the book was written so I was glad that the movie didn't make her quite so helpless (although Richard is definitely "the man"). I think about the ending of the movie quite often and like to imagine what might happen in their lives if the berries don't make them "never wake up".
